The Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the mobile-based application, launched to promote digital transactions, achieved the 10-million-downloads-mark within a span of only 10 days.

BHIM (Bharat Interface for Money) is a Mobile App developed by National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), based on Unified Payment Interface (UPI), launched by Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi to facilitate e-payments directly through bank.

It was launched as part of the 2016 Indian banknote demonetisation and Cashless transaction drive, at a Digi Dhan programme at Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi on December 30, 2016. It has been named after Bhim Rao Ambedkar.

On Monday, Modi tweeted that the app had made transactions faster and easier. He also emphasized the popularity of the app, especially among the young.

“The BHIM app is a fine example of Make in India and how technology is being effectively used to end the menace of corruption and black money”, Modi said in a statement.

“Delighted to know that in a span of 10 days there have been over 10 million downloads of the BHIM App. BHIM App has made transactions faster and easier, thus making it popular among the youth. The App is also beneficial for traders,” an official statement cited the Prime Minister as saying.

BHIM app is the Indian government’s latest app to push India towards a cashless or ‘less-cash’ society. After downloading the BHIM app from the Play store, the user has to register his/her bank account and set up a UPI Pin for it. Your mobile number will then become the payment address and once you are registered, you can begin transacting using the BHIM app.

The app developed by the National Payments Corp. of India (NPCI) is available for download in the Google Play Store for Android smartphones. An iOS version is expected to be launched soon.

The app, which is currently available in Hindi and English, is expected to be launched in other regional languages soon. BHIM is now linked to 35 private and public sector banks.
